Dinner Etiquette

Molly : Hi, Gordon. Have you eaten dinner yet?

Gordon: No, I have not. I am planning to eat dinner with my friend Bob.

Molly : Can I eat with you?

Gordon: You can eat with us, but you must first make me a promise.

Molly : What do you want me to promise?

Gordon: You must not pressure Bob into drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes with you.

Molly : What do you mean?

Gordon: You often ask people to drink with you even after they tell you they have drunk enough.

Molly : I just want to show them I want to be friends with them.

Gordon: Some western people do not like drinking and find it annoying when other people try to make them drink.

Molly : I only do that because I want them to know that I want to be good friends with them.

Gordon: Also, you should not smoke in the middle of dinner. You should wait until we all finish eating. Or you should just quit all together.

Molly : Can I pressure Bob to smoke with me?

Gordon: No, Bob does not like to smoke.

Molly : Bob does not seem very friendly.

Gordon: Even though we do not want to drink alcohol or smoke with you, we still want to be your friend.

Molly : Oh, now I understand.

Gordon: Let's go to eat.
