小月回忆说，自从弟弟出生后，全家人都围着他转，早已忽略了她这个女儿了。等她弟弟懂事后，父母和奶奶对他更是宠爱有加，什么都要小月让着他。小月对这种重男轻女现象十分厌恶。

一般来讲，重男轻女的倾向在农村比城市要严重，在经济落后地区比经济发达地区要严重。

在农村，有很多重体力劳动要做。由于男女体质的差别导致了这些重体力劳动大部分需要由男人来完成，所以每个家庭都希望要男孩。而在城市里，没有那么多重体力活，人们的工作主要是脑力劳动，这些工作女人同样能够胜任、因此男孩女孩都一样。

In rural area, there are many heavy manual labors for every family. Since male is more powerful than female, almost all the heavy manual labors have been done by male. this is why the boys are expected. But in city, the main labor for citizen is brainwork. Female has enough abilities to accomplish it. So there is no different between boys and girls.

重男轻女是有其历史原因的，在几千年的封建社会中，农业生产占主导地位。新中国成立后，随着改革开放的不断深入，人们的生活方式发生了巨大改变。在经济发达地区，人们的观念随着生活方式的改变也由以前的重男轻女转变成了男女平等。而在经济落后地区，人们依然保留传统的生活方式，自然观念上也没有太大的转变。
