November 21, 2006 -- After reaching the NBA Finals in June, the Mavericks were the fashionable pick to win the Western Conference again this season.
Then Dallas started the year with four straight defeats and everyone jumped off the bandwagon like Rutgers football fans after a loss to Cincinnati. Two weeks later all is right with the basketball universe, as the Mavericks have run off six straight victories and as usual, Dirk Nowitzki is leading the way. Welcome back, Dirk. Who needs time off to rest following a grueling season where Dallas went toe to toe with Miami for six games before coming up short in its quest for an NBA title? Obviously not Dirk, who is playing arguably the best hoops of his career.
Nowitzki spent the summer dominating the FIBA World Championship. Now he is showing off the talent that makes him one of the top five players on Earth. The Western Conference Player of the Week has posted five straight double-doubles. During the Mavericks' hot streak, he has scored at least 24 points in each game. For the season he is averaging 25.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists. What makes Nowitzki so special is that he is a shooting guard with the body of a center. The seven footer is connecting on 49 percent of his shots from the field and 90 percent from the foul line. Here are the player rankings for the week of Nov. 14 through Nov. 20. Life is good for King James. At 7-3, his Cavaliers have the top record in the East. On Monday, he was chosen as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week and his Nike commercials show that the 21-year-old can do a lot more than just ball. |

If the Portland big man keeps playing like this, somebody is going to create a more catchy nickname for him than "Z-Bo". |

Yao may be the top center in the game, but Duncan showed why he is considered the best big man Sunday, when he posted 35 points and 14 rebounds against the Kings. |

The individual numbers are there for the superstar. Now we need to see if the Rockets can keep pace with the Spurs and Mavericks for state bragging rights. |

Now that Dirk has entered the top 10, I have a hard time believing he won't have a permanent place. Up next for the star: the Wizards, Spurs, Hornets and Wolves. |

Is this guy for real? Not too many players are capable of posting one game with 20 points and 20 rebounds, let alone back-to-back outings. He had 24 and 21 against the Bobcats on Saturday and 24 and 23 vs. the Grizzlies on Monday. |

8. Emeka Okafor, Charlotte |

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Okafor joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players to average 20 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots after the first 10 games. |

9. Lamar Odom, L.A. Lakers |

After hanging 23 points and 10 rebounds on the Bulls on Sunday, Odom said he is still trying to get his body in shape. Does this mean he is capable of playing even better? |

The point guard is one of the biggest reasons the Jazz have 10 victories in 11 games - their best start in franchise history. He has posted three double-digit-assist games in the past nine days. |

So long Shaquille O'Neal. See you in four to six weeks. The Heat center underwent surgery Sunday on the flap tear in the articular cartilage of his left knee.
Glad to see you Steve Nash. After missing two games with a back injury, the Phoenix guard returned to the lineup in style Monday. Nash hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds left as the Suns stopped the Warriors' five-game winning streak with a 113-110 victory.
