John Blackstone experiences the only thrill ride in America where

screaming from passengers is prohibited.

For 30 years, there wasn’t much more than Mini-Golf at Sacremento Scandia, a fun center, but then, the Screamer arrived.

It soars 168 feet high, then drops rider’s face down at 65 miles an hour.

I feel like I was flying, you know it mean? (Hoo…)You are in heaven.

Quite a thrill, says Scandia’s general manager Steve Baddley.

You are sitting, and essentially you are in a very safe harness that keeps you pinned to your seat.But you are open and exposed to the air.So you are really feeling like here I am at 16 stories going three and half G-forces.You are not thinking about much other than get me down and now!

But here is the catch.When you are on the Screamer, you are not allowed to scream.You get the warning as you’re strapped in.

And if you guys still like making any noise, cover your mouth like this, tightly, so we can’t hear anything at all.

Though people who are getting on the Screamer, and they were screaming.

And they were screaming, which…

And that was trouble.

That was trouble.

Neighbors like Mike Bayless complained about the noise, even though a busy freeway runs right through the neighborhood.

You know there are various types of noise.And freeway, for a neighbor who's lived here for a lifetime, it almost behaves like wild noise.You know, it’s so, the constant running that’s a very low level, and it ends up being not very noticeable when you are used to it.Screaming is a staccato, sharp sound and that immediately puts you on alert, like you’ve heard a child’s screaming.It's, it immediately, there is concern, and on the weekend that goes on constantly.

So the rule came down.No screaming on the Screamer.

(We) don’t have a ride called Sky Screamer if you can’t scream while you are in the air.

But it’s called the Screamer.

I know, I know, while you’re still screaming inside, it’s still a part of the challenge.I like our new angle on this ride.It’s the only throw ride in United States where you are not allowed to scream or make noise.That’s, that actually, part of our niche now.If you come here, you gotta be quite, and it actually makes some more of the challenge.And it’s fantastic.
