Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we meet them may be new, but those values upon which our success depends, honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism—these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility—a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task. 　　我们所面临的挑战或许前所未有，我们应对挑战的措施或许也是崭新的，但我们赖以成功的价值观——诚实、勤勉、勇敢、公正、宽容、好学、忠贞和爱国，这些历久弥新的价值观都是真实的，都是贯穿我国历史无声的进步力量。我们必须重归这些价值观。我们现在需要一个勇于负责的新时代——每一个美国人都认识到我们对自己、对国家、对世界负有责任，不是勉强接受这些责任，而是欣然接受，并坚信没有什么能比全力以赴完成这项重任更能得到精神上的满足和找到自我。 　　This is the price and the promise of citizenship. 　　这就是作为公民的义务和承诺。 　　This is the source of our confidence: the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. 　　这就是我们信心的源泉——响应上帝号召，去把握无常的命运。 　　This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed, why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall. The snow was stained with blood.
