There can yet be a silver lining to the Tucson
massacreifwestoptryingtoexploititfor
politicalpurposesandinsteadseizeuponit
asafreshchancetochangeourcultureof
violence—toomuchhate,toomanyguns,
too many killings. The bitterness in politics is
partofthislargertrouble.Thereisno
evidenceitpromptedLoughner—andthe
fingerpointingshouldstop—butweknew
long before Tucson it must be cleaned up. In
comingweeks,PresidentObamashould
inviteGOPleadersaswellaschieftainsof
entertainment and news, the NRA and others
toseeifwecanreachahigherplane.
