The U.S. government has been hacking Chinese targets that include the nation's mobile-phone companies and one of the country's most prestigious universities, former government contractor Edward Snowden alleged in a series of reports published over the weekend by a Hong Kong newspaper.

'The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data,' Mr. Snowden told the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong's leading English-language daily.

Mr. Snowden is believed to be hiding in an unknown location in Hong Kong, where he has been holed up since flying into the city from Hawaii on May 20. While the U.S. has asked that Hong Kong authorities surrender him back home, it is unclear how the government─which maintains an extradition treaty with the U.S.─will respond to such a request. The city's police and chief executive have steadfastly refused to comment on the case.

The SCMP's report didn't give details on how attacks on China's mobile-phone companies may have been conducted but cited mainland cybersecurity experts' concerns that U.S.-made components might make telecommunications equipment vulnerable to so-called 'backdoor' attacks.

On Sunday, Chinese official media slammed the U.S. following the latest allegations about U.S. cyber-snooping. 'The United States, which has long been trying to play innocent as a victim of cyber attacks, has turned out to be the biggest villain in our age,' a commentary by Xinhua said.

Meanwhile, according to Mr. Snowden, Beijing's Tsinghua University has been the subject of 'extensive hacking' by the NSA this year, with at least 63 computers and servers attacked during a single day in January. The SCMP's report noted that the university is home to one of the country's largest major backbone networks, the China Education and Research Network─a hub through which the Internet data of millions of Chinese users could be mined, the report said.

A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry didn't have an immediate comment on Mr. Snowden's comments, while officials at Tsinghua didn't immediately respond.

The SCMP also quoted Mr. Snowden as saying that computers at PacNet, a private company that owns fiber-optic networks in the region spanning China, Japan, Korea and Singapore, among other countries, were hacked in 2009 in an operation that has since been shut down. PacNet didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

This month, the SCMP published additional reports from Mr. Snowden, who accused the NSA of conducting hundreds of cyberattacks in Hong Kong and mainland China since 2009. The city's security secretary said last week that one of the alleged targets, Chinese University, has found no indications that its systems have been breached and that its traffic is continuously monitored around the clock.

Hong Kong's justice secretary said last week that the government handles all extradition requests according to its laws. Even if the city does ultimately surrender Mr. Snowden back to the U.S., legal experts have said that if he files for asylum or contests the U.S.'s request, he will likely be able to prolong his stay in Hong Kong for months, if not years.
