Chinese officials have detained an American in Shanghai in connection with a pharmaceutical industry probe, broadening the scope of foreign nationals and companies ensnared in China's scrutiny of the drug industry.

Chinese police also questioned on Tuesday two additional AstraZeneca AZN.LN +0.24%PLC employees in Shanghai, the company said, days after police took a third employee, a sales representative, away for questioning. All three of the employees are Chinese nationals, AstraZeneca said.

China's National Health and Family Planning Commission said Tuesday that 39 hospital employees in China's southern Guangdong province will be punished for accepting 2.82 million yuan ($459,000) from two pharmaceutical companies from January 2010 to December 2012, according a report from the official Xinhua News Agency. The report didn't provide details on the companies.

Glaxo has said it is cooperating with the Chinese investigation and that such conduct is against its policies.
