词根memor来源于拉丁文memo一词，表示“记忆（remember）”之意。单词remember的词根member经过辅音b的脱落和元音e-o的变异，演化成memor的形式。此外，该词根还可写成mne和mnemon的变体，这与希腊神话中的记忆女神摩尼摩西呢（mnenosyne）的名字密切相关。单词amnesty（大赦；赦免）在希腊语中表示“忘却”的意思，原因在于其前缀a-就是表示否定，没有记住就是忘却，忘却别人的过错和罪行，引申为“赦免”的含义。据说历史上第一个实行大赦政策的人是一位古希腊将军，他宽恕自己的敌人而忘却前嫌，为后人所称道。医学术语中的单词amnesia同出此源，指代一个人容易忘记事情，也即患了“健忘症”。
