全球最大的航空公司--美国航空公司的航班4月2日从芝加哥奥海尔国际机场起飞，次日下午抵达上海浦东国际机场，这标志着美国航空公司芝加哥-上海的每日直达航班正式投入运营。美国航空公司负责人表示：“开通中国航线对我们意义重大，这将加强美国航空公司在全球的竞争地位。

One such strategy was its Sunday launch of daily non-stop flights to China.
　　报道中，由于全球油价攀升、航空公司之间相互打“价格战”，“芝加哥-上海” 每日直航的政策可以帮助美国航空公司保持有利的竞争地位，由此afloat可以解释为：free or out of difficulty, especially financial difficulty（顺利的，免受经济困难的）。举个例子：The firm couldn't keep the business afloat during the recession.（在经济衰退期间, 这家公司不能顺利维持业务。）
　　另外，afloat原意指在空中或海上“漂浮的状态”，如：The ship was listing badly but still kept afloat. （船倾侧得很厉害, 但却仍然漂浮不沉。）由此，afloat也可引申为“流传；散播；计划等尚未定案”，举个例子：There' s a story afloat that he' ll resign.（ 有传闻说他要辞职。）
