The National Flag

A bracing October wind blows

across the Square of liberated China:

the bright five-starred flag

flutters in the blue sky.

Flag, how glorious, how beautiful,

like a new blossom,

dyed by the blood of heroes,

tempered in the flames of struggle.

To weave you, four hundred and seventy-five

million people have worked day and night

with their lives and love,

with great ideals of freedom and happiness.

When you are raised in the sky over our motherland

we stare at you,

shout your praises.

Our hands will defend you,

as now, we salute you.

When you fly high,

all will change:

the decayed will revive, the darkness brighten,

the aged be rejuvenated, the ugly become handsome.

The sad will rejoice,

the dirt will be cleaned,

everywhere over this once silent land

comes joyous laughter and song.

This flag, embodying our will to fight for unity,

representing our people’s age-old longing,

pointing out the road to a new society.

The sun will set,

rivers may dry up,

but you, the victorious banner of the Chinese people,

will stay fresh forever, fluttering over all.
