“元宵节”英语怎么说？

“元宵节”的英语是 the Lantern Festival，还可以叫做 the Spring Lantern Festival 或者 the Festival of Lantern。不管叫什么，都离不开 lantern /'læntən/，它表示“灯笼”。元宵节重要的习俗之一就是挂灯笼，所以元宵节也被称为“灯节”，英语里要说 the Lantern Festival。

不少同学问吉米老师，节日前面到底加不加 the，为什么“圣诞节” Christmas 前面不加 the，但元宵节却加了？一般来说，西方的节日前面不加 the，中国传统节日前面可以加 the，也可以不加。

例句：The Lantern Festival fell on February 15th this year.今年的元宵节在 2 月 15 日。



the first month in the lunar year正月

之前吉米老师讲过“正月初二”可以说 the second day of the Chinese New Year，如果没有具体到哪天，只想表达“正月”可以说 the first month in the lunar year，也就是农历的第一个月。

有同学问，表达“正月初二”的时候，能不能说 the second day of the first month in the lunar year，也可以。同理，“农历二月初二”就可以说 the second day of the second month in the lunar year。

例句：In China, people celebrate the Lantern Festival on the fifth day of the first month in the lunar year.在中国，人们正月十五过元宵节。



“元宵”和“汤圆”英语一样吗

元宵节那天，有的地方吃元宵，有的地方吃汤圆，它们英语怎么说呢？

yuanxiao 元宵tangyuan 汤圆

元宵和汤圆的英语就是拼音。但要注意的是，老外不会区分它们，在他们眼里 yuanxiao 和 tangyuan 是同一种小吃。而且由于大多数中国人都吃汤圆，所以老外也更熟悉 tangyuan 这种说法。

例句：I prefer sweet tangyuan to savory ones.比起咸汤圆，我更喜欢甜的。



sesame paste /peɪst/芝麻馅

paste 这个词在字典里的中文翻译是“酱”，但是不完全准确，它的英英释义是 a soft smooth food，也就是“柔软湿滑的食物”，糊状的东西都属于 paste，比方说芝麻糊、面糊糊。

所以汤圆里的“芝麻馅”用英语说就是 sesame paste。“红豆馅”就是 red bean paste，“花生馅”就是 peanut paste。

例句：Do you like tangyuan with sesame paste or peaunt paste?你喜欢芝麻馅汤圆还是花生馅汤圆？



元宵习俗有哪些？

hang lanterns

挂灯笼

“挂灯笼”的“挂”要用 hang /hæŋ/ 这个单词，不过它也不止是“挂”，只要是“悬挂、吊着”都可以用。比方说“晾衣服”是 hang clothes，“我的头发披着” 可以说 my hair hangs down。

例句：How many lanterns do we have to hang?我们要挂多少个灯笼？



light firecrackers放鞭炮

“鞭炮”和“炮竹”都是 firecracker /'faɪəkrækə/，“烟花”是 firework。firecracker 用单数还是复数，要看鞭炮的数量，但是 firework 这个词一般要用复数形式。

“放鞭炮”其实就是点燃鞭炮，动词要用 light，这个词表示“使燃烧”，“点根烟”就是 light a cigarette，“生火”就是 light the fire。

例句：For your safety, you'd better not light firecrackers.为了安全起见，你最好不要放鞭炮。
