如在电影“You’ve got mail”(笔者注:这是由Tom Hanks和Meg Ryan主演的一部美国影片,中文译名为《网上情缘》)中,书店营业员George问Joe付款方式,用的是“How will you be paying for this?”,Joe答“Cash”。为何不直接用“How will you pay for this?”,这代表了一种习惯还是一种思维?”

How will you pay for this?

若他说“How will you pay for this?” 由此可见,will be paying和will pay在语气上和礼貌程度上差别很大。

Guest: Hello. My name is Tang. I’ve just arrived from the UK.

Receptionist: Good morning, Sir. Do you have a reservation?

Guest: Yes.

Receptionist: Could you tell me your full name, please?(您能告诉我您的全名吗?)

Guest: Jimmy Tang.

Receptionist: Thank you, Mr. Tang….Yes, we have your reservation. You reserved a standard single room, didn’t you?

Guest: Yes, that’s right.

Receptionist: How long will you be staying, Mr. Tang?

Guest: Just one night. I’ll fly to America tomorrow.

Receptionist: I see. And how will you be paying?

Guest: With a traveler’s check. Is that OK?

Receptionist: Yes, that’s fine.

How long will you be staying?

How will you be paying?

How long will you stay?

How will you pay?

Guest: Good evening. My name is Jennifer Thomson. I’ve just arrived from Canada.

Receptionist: Welcome to our hotel, Ms. Thomson. Are you on holiday?

Guest: No, on business.

Receptionist: I see, and how long will you be staying?

Guest: My reservation is for a week in a standard room.

Receptionist: Thanks you, Ms. Thomson. And how will you be paying?

Guest: By company credit card.

Last week at a dinner party, the hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs. Rumbold. Mrs. Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation.

“A new play is coming to ‘The Globe’ soon,” I said. “Will you be seeing it?”

“No,” she answered.

“Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year?” I asked.

“No,” she answered.

“Will you be staying in England?” I asked.

“No,” she answered.

In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner.

“Young man,” she answered, “If you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner!”

Will you be seeing it?

Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year?

Will you be staying in England?

Who will I be acting with?

a. When will you pay back the money?

b. When will you be paying back the money?

但我们也要注意,这并不是说以后我们就不用will do来提问了,而一律用will be doing代替will do来提问。

Will you be lending me ten dollars?(×)

Will you lend me ten dollars?

a. Will you be staying in this evening?

b. Will you stay in this evening?

1. a. Will you be bringing the piano in here?

b. Will you please bring the piano in here?

2. a. Will you be joining us for dinner?

b. Will you join us for dinner?

3. A: ____ you ____ (live) in the dormitory this year?

B: Not if I can help it. I’ve been thinking of renting an apartment off campus with some friends of mine.

4. “Is there anything more that you ____ (want) tonight, Mr. Smith?” the maid said.
