A giant cabbage weighing 150 kilograms is on display at the Shanghai World Expo in the Jiangsu Pavilion. But this cabbage isn't an agricultural wonder. It's made of jade.
The work is carved from a single stone, the biggest Chinese cabbage jade sculpture in the world. The ruffled semi-translucent leaves highlights the sculptor's skill in using the various natural colors of the jade.
Three grasshoppers camouflaged in the leaves add to the realism. In ancient China, cabbage stood for "great fortune", and grasshoppers were a symbol of many children. This made the sculpture perfect as part of a dowry.
