据报道，作为全球最大的水稻生产和消费国，中国政府已经批准首个转基因水稻品种投入商业化种植。消息人士称，其商业化种植可于2-3年后开始，这意味着我国将成为全球首个转基因水稻商业化种植国家。

据《上海商报》报道，农业部日前已向我国自主研发的转基因水稻发放了安全证书。

在上面的报道中，genetically modified rice就是“转基因水稻”，也可以缩写为GM rice。Transgenic technology（转基因技术）指运用科学手段从某种生物中提取所需要的基因，将其转入另一种生物中，使与另一种生物的基因进行重组，从而产生特定的具有优良遗传形状的物质。Genetically modified soybean（转基因大豆）等GM food（转基因食品）甚至transgenic animals（转基因动物）的出现都是这一技术发展的产物。而genetically modified organism（GMO，转基因生物）则是该技术更高端的应用。

现在市面上的水稻品种多样化，有hybrid rice（杂交水稻）、green rice（绿色水稻）、organic rice（有机水稻）、pollution-free rice（无公害水稻）等。根据水稻播种期、生长期和成熟期的不同，又可分为early-season/early rice（早稻）、middle-season rice（中稻）和late rice（晚稻）三类。
