Man and His EnvironmentThroughout history man has changed his physical environment in order to improve his way of life. With the tools of technology he has altered many physical features of the earth. He has transformed woodlands and prairies into farms and made lakes and reservirs out of rivers for errigation purpose or hydroelectric power. Each day thousands of tons of gases come out of the exhausts of motor vehicles. Smoke from factories pollutes the air of industrialized areas and the surrouding areas of the countryside. The pollution of water is equally harmful. The whole ecological balance of the sea is being changed and industrial wastes have already made many rivers lifeless.

Now environment protecion is more pressing than ever before. As we know, massive destrucion of environment has brought about negative effects and even poses a great threat to man’s existence.

A4.What kind of Man Do You Wish to Be?

A4.What kind of Man Do You Wish to Be?

What kind of man you wish to be you will be. Oh! What a glorious saying this is! But can we really attain our aims if we only wish? Of course, the answer is in the negative.

You may become a lawyer only after you have mastered laws, a merchant only after you have had commercial experience, and a general only after you have learnt military tactics. In short, you may become what you wish to be only if you possess the necessary ability and knowledge.

Every boy should ask himself this question, "What kind of man do I wish to be in the future, a scholar, a merchant, a farmer, or a workman?"

Having settled that question, one should hold to one's purpose with firmness and unfaltering devotion. Having one objective today and another objective tomorrow is very bad. Success comes only after struggles with natural obstacles.

possessv.

settlev.

firmnessv.

Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what other people think or say or do. it is more important than appearance, gift or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home.

The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is to play on the string we have, and that is our attitude.

U3-3.No Pains, No Gains(不劳无获)

U3-3.No Pains, No Gains(不劳无获)

The height which great men reach and keep is not attained by a sudden flight.

Most of us feel envious of the famous and successful man. We do not understand why they are so popular and honored while we are mere simple common folks. In our misconception, we think that people are prosperous because they are especially gifted or that they are "just lucky".

All these have taken root in our stubborn minds, and we refuse to believe that most great men have a mind which is the same as, or even simpler and duller than that of ours.

Yet, their triumphs are great. Why? Because they are apt to fight difficulties with perseverance and without fatigue, undergo suffering without minding the wouds; they realize that hardship form the road which they pass through before reaching their destination. Their endurance is more powerful than that of ours for the simple reason that they submit without complaint to each storm in life.

enviousa.

misconceptionn.误解

prosperousa.

fatiguen.

submitv.甘受

be apt to: 易于;倾向于

U6-1.On Books

U6-1.On Books

Books are of various kinds and have different contents. We have history books recording past events, geography books dealing with the earth, mathematics books focousing on space and numbers, language books studying the means of communication, and literary books reflecting social problems. In a word, we have various books dealing with different things in the world.

Reading books can enrich our knowledge. A famous critic once said,"A good book is a present the writer left to us." With the present, we can learn lots of things we did not previously know, be aware of what has happened in the past as well as what is going to happen in the future, or gain selfunderstanding. Because "art is long and life is short", it's impossible for a man to learn everything through his own experience, while books can help him to achieve his purpose.

However, some books can be harmful, namely, the unhealthy books (pornographic books, etc.). In those unhealthy books, there might be much description about violence, superstition and sex. People who are taken up by such books will be dispirited and they may commit crimes. So it is said that a critical point of view is important in reading a book.
