The Queen has insisted that the official residences are open to the public because of the income that visitors will generate. While the British public will enjoy a bank holiday to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29, disgruntled staff at Windsor Castle and the Queen’s Scottish palaces won’t be getting the day off.

Staff at Buckingham Palace and those working for Prince Charles at Clarence House have always expected to be on duty on the big day. But their counterparts at Windsor, and Holyrood and Balmoral north of the border, were hoping for a day off because they will have nothing to do with the Royal Wedding. ‘It hasn’t gone down too well with some of the staff who were hoping for a day off to watch the wedding,’ said a source. ‘They have been told that they will have a lieu day but that it’s business as usual so that Royal fans can take part in history.’

A spokesman for the Royal Collection confirmed: ‘Members of staff at the attractions will be working as -normal on April 29. It will be a great day to visit.’It is expected that the Royal Wedding will be one of the busiest days of the year for touring Royal properties, particularly the grounds of the Queen’s Scottish estate, Balmoral, where William and Kate’s romance blossomed while they were students at St Andrews University.
