---Marquis de Condorcet

If you took the strengths of others, and compared them to your weaknesses, do you think this would make you feel good? The funny thing is, this is36most of us do at one time or another---and some of us do pretty37 .

It’s surely a practice for a38in self-confidence and for unhappiness. Let’s say I take a look at someone who creates39artwork on their website and I look at my art, and realize I don’t come40to being matched with him. In fact, I look pretty pitiful. But it’s not a fair41 . If I looked at my strengths---writing useful and honest posts---I can see that I have a lot to offer, a lot to be happy about.

That’s so important---being able to look at your own strengths, and see your true42 . It’s actually one of the43to success and happiness.

I want to talk about this issue44an email from a reader recently: I have some teammates from very rich families. I can’t stop myself comparing my lifestyle with45 . I must say that my46planning is sound enough to take care of my existing family; and I can take care of new family member also, at least for47even if I lose my current job. But48I see or hear them spending so much money after possessions, I start comparing49 . How can I stop this habit, without changing jobs?

This is an excellent but tough50 . I think it’s51to compare ourselves to others, but it often makes us unhappy even if we have enough and52be happy with what we have. My quick advice: try to be aware of when you start comparing yourself to others…once you’ve developed this53 , stop yourself and tell yourself, “Stop that!” And then54thinking about all the things you do have, the things you love, the people you have and the blessings that55has given you. Make this a regular practice, and you’ll start to be happier with your life.

第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,从每题所给的(A、B、C和D)四个选项中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything. Animals, spiders, insects...

One day while walking through the woods the nice old man found a cocoon(茧) of a butterfly. He took it home. A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then appeared easily.

But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled(褶皱的) wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract(缩小) in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.

It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature’s way of forcing fluid(液体) from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.

And we could never fly.

56. What did the old man find when walking through the woods?

A. A cocoon of a butterfly. B. A butterfly.

C. A spider. D. A pair of scissors.

57. What would have happened to the butterfly without the old man’s help?

A. It would have died in the cocoon.

B. It would have become a true butterfly.

C. It would have been strong enough to go farther.

D. It would have stopped struggling through the cocoon.

58. The underlined word “cripple” in Paragraph 7 probably means ______.

A. disableB. climb C. enableD. beat

59. What can we learn from this story?

A. Man can never go against nature.

B. It’s necessary to live with some difficulties.

C. One cannot help others without thinking twice.
dongluonan 发表于 2009-4-10 20:51:16
D. Mankind should take good care of insects.

Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside other traditional subjects such as math and languages.

The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten: someone starts, the next voice comes from the far right, a third from the other side.

The aim of the game is to listen for an opportunity to shout out the number without clashing (冲突) with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in, but by the fifth time round, they develop a rhythm (节奏). The message: give other people space but also confidently claim your own. This is a requirement for social well-being.

The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course. It is intended for students preparing for university entrance exams.

“The course isn’t there to make you happy,” Ernst Fritz-Schubert, the school principal, warned pupils, “but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy.”

Cooking a meal together is one of the class exercises. Improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses is another.

The course is taught for three periods a week. Despite the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.

“In the first period, we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people,” said Fanny, 17.

Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also exist at some US universities, mainly based on positive thinking, using findings from studies of depression.

60. What’s the purpose of this passage?

A. To introduce the happiness course.

B. To describe all the traditional courses.

C. To arouse the readers’ interest in happiness.

D. To help students struggle against being sad.

61. The game intended for the students in the 2nd paragraph mainly to.

A. try their best to get opportunities for themselves

B. practice how to speak in front of people

C. confidently speak out one’s opinions

D. equip them with required social skills

62. According to the passage, the happiness course is.

A. created by the Willy Hellpach School

B. to make all the students happy all the time

63. It can be inferred from the passage that.

A. the students’ self-respect can also improve happiness

B. the students just took the course as a laughing matter

C. the students can certainly become happy after the course

In all one’s lifetime it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. But it is exactly oneself that one has the least understanding of.

When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate yourself. It seems that everything you seek for is within your reach. When you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself, mistaking difficulties for your own incompetence.

To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself---aware of both one’s strengths and shortages. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much, for ideals can never be fully realized. You may be courageous to meet challenges but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts. That’s to say so long as you have a perfect knowledge of yourself there won’t be difficulties you can’t overcome.

To get a thorough understanding of oneself needs self-appreciation. Whether you think you are a towering tree or a blade of grass, a high mountain or a small stone, you represent a state of nature that has its own value. If you earnestly admire yourself you’ll have a real sense of self-appreciation, which will give you confidence. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself, you’ll be enabled to fight and overcome any adversity.
dongluonan 发表于 2009-4-10 20:52:25
To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires doing oneself a favor when it’s needed. In time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep. As you are aware, what a person physically has is but a human body that’s vulnerable when exposed to the elements. So if you fall ill, it’s up to you to take a good care of yourself.

In a word, to get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control of one’s life. Then one will find one’s life full of color and flavor.

67. What is described in Paragraph 2 is to show that ______.

A. A person is easy to estimate himself too high when succeeding

B. It is difficult for one to have a perfect knowledge of oneself

C. You should keep up high spirits whatever difficulties you meet

D. It is essential that a person get a thorough understanding of himself

68. Remember not to expect too much of yourself when looking forward to the future because _______.

A. your shortages might stop you succeeding

B. ideals can never be turned into realities

C. you are likely to lack enough courage

D. you haven’t understood yourself quite well

69. Having a real sense of self-appreciation can enable one ______.

A. to realize one’s shortagesB. not to be too proud

C. to gain enough self-confidenceD. not to go downhill

70. If this passage is divided into three parts, the second part should consist of ______.

A. Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3 B. Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 5

C. Paragraph 3 to Paragraph 5D. Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5

Have you ever wondered why there are so many skin colours in the world? Do you know why people living in particular areas usually have a certain colour? Biology and history are the two reasons for this.

Skin contains something called melanin, which determines a person’s skin colour. The more melanin a person has, the darker his or her skin will be. The amount of and production of melanin are controlled by genetics, but can be affected by other things, such as sunlight. If a person lives in a place with strong sunlight, his or her skin will protect itself by producing more melanin, making the skin darker. In a place with less sunlight, a person’s body will produce less melanin, making the skin lighter.

Skin colour is also affected by another source—vitamin D. Humans all need vitamin D to build bones. People can get it by eating foods such as fish and milk, or from sunlight, which causes vitamin production in the skin. Melanin protects skin by absorbing sunlight, so sunlight absorbed by melanin cannot be used for vitamin D production. Therefore, a dark-skinned person will produce less vitamin D than a light-skinned person when they received the same amount of sunlight.

The connection between vitamin D production and skin colour is clear when we look at evolution. The earliest humans lived in Africa, their dark skin covered with hair. When they moved to places that had less sunlight, their bodies produced less vitamin D because of their dark skin. As a result, their skin made less melanin, so they could get enough sunlight to produce vitamin D. their skin gradually got lighter and they lost hair. Now, people who live in areas with strong sunlight, like Africa, have darker skin, while people living in other areas have lighter skin. The exception to this is the Inuit, who live in a place with little sunlight, but have dark skin because they eat a lot of fish and have enough vitamin D.

Evolution has given us a rainbow of skin colours. Humans have always had melanin to determine our skin colour. What has changed through history is the environment where we have lived. This has in turn changed our melanin production, and eventually, skin colour.

Recently, the introduction of fuel tax has become a widespread concern. Generally, people hold two different views about it.

Those who support this policy desire to see it carried out as soon as possible. Their reasons are as follows. Firstly, the policy has been tried out in some areas in China, so the policy should be successful in the whole country. Besides, the policy is designed to encourage greater use of smaller and energy-efficient cars. What’s more, it is intended for people to use cars less often, which will not only be good for the environment but ease the pressure on traffic as well.

However, some people hold the opposite view. They argue that fuel tax may raise the cost of transportation as well as other industries. In addition, the technology for making energy-saving cars is not very advanced, which leads to a limited choice of such cars.

As far as I’m concerned, though some people may feel unhappy when paying more for fuel at the beginning, this form will surely benefit the environment and help to promote a healthy development of economy in the long run. Therefore, we should welcome this decision and support it.
