Years ago, my mother told me about a Thai(泰国的) man who married an American woman against the wishes of his mother. The mother refused to speak to her son because he had married a foreigner. So I asked my mother, “You would never do that, would you?” “No,” she answered, and then she said, “I wouldn’t speak to you for 10 years!” I laughed at her joke and asked “Really?”

I was born and raised in the United States by Thai parents. We were a Thai family growing up in America.

Well, I didn’t marry a Thai man or an American. I married a Frenchman. When I got married, my mother was so happy that I doubted what she said before.

My husband has lived for the last 25 years in the United States, which is a great melting pot with different cultures. He was raised in France, but he chose to make his life here. We were married, so we prepared ourselves to overcome the culture barrier(障

Dick often goes traveling when the summer holiday begins. But he was out of luck this summer.

He went to an old temple(寺院) on a high mountain by himself. Suddenly it began to rain heavily and he hurried to go down the mountain. He found the wooden bridge was under the water. He couldn’t find anybody in the dark. He had to spend the rainy night in a broken farmhouse at the foot of the mountain. He was so hungry that he hardly fell asleep. The next morning the rain stopped and he found the bridge was damaged(损 坏的). He saw the river was not too deep and wide and tried to swim across it. In the middle of the river the water nearly washed him away. Two farmers saved him

but he lost his bag. They gave him some food and dry clothes. He thanked them and went to the nearest town to call up his parents.

At the end of the street, Dick found a small hotel and went in. He asked the price for a room.

“A room on the first floor is twenty dollars, on the second floor, fifteen dollars and on the third, ten dollars,” answered the owner.

The young man has only eight dollars in all his pockets. He said thanks and was leaving. The owner asked, “Don’t you like our hotel?” “Yes, it’s good,” said Dick, “but it’s not tall enough!”

Perhaps you cycle(骑自行车) to school or to work, or maybe at most a short cycling trip with friends. How would you feel about spending months on the road traveling alone from the UK to China by bike?

For British cyclist Pete Jones, cycling long distances and staying out at night are very natural. And now Mr Jones is taking a trip across from Britain to China. Having lived in Xinjiang for three years, and having visited China many times since 1992, Pete Jones is no stranger to China.

But he says many people are puzzled by his passion for cycling, asking why he would choose to

cycle when he can drive a car.

Edward Genochio was another British cyclist who completed a 41,000 km trip to China and back. He said his aim was to tell people that cycling does no harm to nature and the environment, and it is safe.
