《亡灵书》是一部古老而宏大的诗歌总集，共二十七篇，包括歌谣，祷文，咒语和颂歌，用彩墨抄录在纸草卷上，保存在帝王和富贵人家的墓中。其中有些内容，在古王国时期的金字塔铭文中已有发现。因原文是象形文字，早已失传，十九世纪初发现象形文字与科普特文（一种以希腊文字为主的文字）对照的碑文，才得以破译。
整个亡灵书中最著名的一段咒语，内容大意是说人死后要在阴间之神欧西里斯之前接受审判，他必须谨慎地否认一切可能犯的罪行，并且一一说出阴间的42位判官神的名字。这样就可以被判无罪而进入永生之境。由死者的否认中，我们可以看到古代埃及社会中一般的社会规范和道德标准，因此死亡之书不但是一份宗教文献，也是有关社会和思想的重要材料。

《牢记本身，勿昧前因》意味深长，要求亡灵诵着这段咒语，念念不忘自己的本名，因为名字就是自我，记得自我是再生的大前提。这和佛教的忘了前因再重新托生的观念是完全不同的。

这是一首对太阳神“喇”（Ｒａ）的著名颂歌。喇神是埃及神话中最重要的神，是开天辟地创造万物的神，常作鹰首人身之象。（第１４行）亡灵经历重重劫难，要靠太阳神的佑护才能复生，因此必须唱赞美喇神的颂歌。第１１行中的玛特女神，是喇神之女，司审讯亡灵之职，头戴一根象征正直的羽毛。
这首颂歌虽然是宗教诗，但已远远超越了宗教诗而成为哲理的探索和生命的礼赞。普照万物的太阳成了生命力，光明和欢乐的象征，对喇神的崇拜也具有了生命力崇拜的意味。

与前一首诗主题相同，但前者气度轩昂，而这一首《宛若莲花》静穆清丽。由于莲花形似光芒四射的日轮，而且和太阳一样从黑暗的水底冉冉升起，所以在画象中，喇神有时现端坐莲花上之像。因此亡灵自比莲花，经过考验确证其纯洁之后，在喇神的气息下静静地升入阳光世界。 |
