Gilas, the Philippines men’s basketball team, has been “uninvited” to the William Jones Cup basketball tournament in Taiwan scheduled this July, an offshoot of the tensions between the Asian neighbors after the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by Philippine Coast Guard in disputed waters earlier this month.

菲律宾男子篮球队Gilas已不再被邀请参加定于7月在台湾举行的威廉琼斯杯国际篮球邀请赛(William Jones Cup)。菲律宾海岸警卫队(Philippine Coast Guard) 本月早些时候在争议水域射杀一名台湾渔民之后，两地之间关系陷入紧张，而上述事件正是这种紧张关系造成的。

“Just got word from the organizers that we have been un-invited to the Jones Cup,” Gilas head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes said in a tweet.

Gilas总教练雷耶斯(Chot Reyes)在一条推特(Twitter)信息中说，刚刚从组织者那里获得消息，我们已经参加琼斯杯的比赛邀请已被取消。

Gilas is the defending champion of the Taiwan-based annual international basketball tournament. The team won the championship last year against a team from the United States, the Philippines’ first championship win in the Jones Cup since 1998.

今年，Gilas是这个在台湾举办的年度国际篮球联赛的卫冕冠军队。这只球队去年打败了来自美国的一支球队获得冠军，这是菲律宾1998年以来首次赢得威廉琼斯杯的冠军。

Coach Reyes told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that Jones Cup organizers informed Gilas late Monday they were withdrawing the invitation for the Philippine team’s participation in the tournament because “they cannot be responsible for our safety.”

He said the cancellation of the Philippine team’s participation in the Jones Cup will have a “big impact” on Gilas’ preparation for the FIBA Asia Championship, which Manila will host for the first time in 40 years. The last time the Philippine hosted FIBA Asia in 1973, the country emerged as the champion.

他说，取消菲律宾的参赛资格将会对Gilas迎战亚洲篮球锦标赛（FIBA Asia Championship，简称：亚锦赛）产生很大影响。亚洲篮球锦标赛将在马尼拉举行，这是马尼拉40年来首次主办这一赛事。菲律宾上一次主办亚锦赛是在1973年，在那次比赛中，菲律宾队赢得了冠军。

The FIBA Asia intercontinental basketball championship will be held between Aug. 1-11 in Manila. It is the qualifying tournament for next year’s FIBA World Cup in Spain. The top three teams in the August tournament will represent Asia in the World Cup.

亚锦赛将于8月1日-11日在马尼拉举行，这是为明年举行的西班牙世界杯进行的资格赛，获得亚锦赛前3名的球队将代表亚洲征战世界杯。

“The Jones Cup was supposed to be our last preparation before FIBA [Asia],” said Coach Reyes, who added that a replacement tournament has yet to be decided on.

Before the shooting incident earlier this month, Gilas beat the Shanghai Sharks team, owned by former National Basketball Association superstar Yao Ming. The game with the Sharks was supposed to have been held in 2012, but a tense atmosphere then because of a dispute between China and the Philippines over maritime territories in South China Sea resulted in the game being canceled.
