While visiting his son in Honduras in 1959, Montgomery, then 72, met with Guatemalan president Ydigoras, who warned that if Britain did not accede to Guatemalan demands for a port on the Caribbean, he might be forced to mount an invasion of British Honduras. "Oh, I wouldn't do that," Montgomery replied. "In that case we would certainly send a force ourselves. I might be part of it and I'm not used to losing my battles."

No invasion took place.

一九五九年，七十二岁的蒙哥马利往洪都拉斯看儿子，并会晤危地马拉总统伊迪戈拉斯。伊迪戈拉斯警告说，假如英国不答应在加勒比海给危地马拉一个港口，他恐怕别无他法，惟有出兵进侵英属洪都拉斯。蒙哥马利回答说：「我是你，就不会这样做。你出兵，我们也一定会出兵，而我可能随军出征。我很少打败仗。」

伊迪戈拉斯终于没有出兵。

【 解 说 】 Meet with 是 美 式 英 语 ， 但 在 英 国 也 渐 见 流 行 。 Meet with 和 meet 的 分 别 ， 在 于 meet with 指 正 式 的 会 面 ， 而 meet 则 可 能 是 偶 然 相 遇 。 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The management met with the union representatives over the issue （ 资方 和 工 会 代 表 会 晤 ， 讨 论 这 个 问 题 ） 。 （ 2 ） I met him in the street （ 我 在 街上 碰 到 他 ） 。

Mount an invasion 的 mount ， 可 解 作 「 筹 办 」 或 「 发 动 」 ， 例 如 to mount an exhibition （ 筹 办 展 览 ） 、 to mount a propaganda campaign （ 发 起宣 传 运 动 ） 、 to mount a surprise attack （ 发 动 突 袭 ） 。
