Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, was a brilliant and alluring woman famed for her sexual appetite. She allegedly erected a small temple where she kept scores of young male lovers （ given an elixir to increase their lust ） , with whom she practised sexual secrets learned from courtesans.

Indeed, Cleopatra was rumoured to have at one time orally “ entertained ” more than 100 men in the course of a single evening. She was Caesar's mistress until his murder in 44 BC, and later the mistress of Mark Anthony. Her nickname? “ She who gapes wide for a thousand men. ”

有 传 言 甚 至 说 ， 克 丽 欧 佩 脱 拉 曾 在 一 夜 之 间 用 口 「 服 侍 」 了 一 百 多 个 男 人 。 她 做 过 凯 撒 的 情 妇 ， 直 到 公 元 前 四 十 四 年 凯 撒 遇 刺 ； 之 后 又 做 马 可 ． 安 东 尼 的 情 妇 。 克 丽 欧 佩 脱 拉 的 绰 号 是 甚 么 ？ 「 尝 千 男 而 不 餍 」 。

【 解 说 】 Gape 一 般 指 「 张 口 瞪 视 」 或 「 张 开 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The little boy gaped at the elephant （ 那 小 男 孩 张 口 结 舌 瞪 大 象 ） 。 （ 2 ） Wherever we went, bomb craters gaped in the ground （ 我 们 无 论 去 到 哪 ， 地 上 都 是 炸 弹 坑 ） 。 Gape wide for a thousand men 直 译 是 「 为 一 千 个 男 人 而 大 开 」 。 Courtesan 一 字 ， 原 意 是 court mistress ： 「 朝 廷 大 人 先 生 的 情 妇 」 ， 自 然 是 「 高 级 妓 女 」 。
