Rain cats and dogs
I knew this prhase for years. I don't know if all of you know it or not. It means “倾盆大雨”. And I just learned the reason behind the phrase. Some time ago in a western country, many cats and dogs were drown after a big rain which caused a flood in the city. When people came out of house after rain, they found many dead cats and dogs. So they said to each other: Wow, it just rained cats and dogs from the sky. So later the phrase was popularly used for describing the heavy rain.
The other way to say so is: It's pouring. They're the same.
Sample sentence:
A. We seldom have rains. But when it has one, it rains cats and dogs.
B. Don't go outside, it's pouring now. |
