好莱坞与腾讯联手提供流媒体服务

Hollywood’s biggest studios are working with Tencent, one of China’s largest internet groups, on a Netflix-style streaming service that aims to beat piracy by delivering movies to homes across China two weeks after their US cinema release.
好莱坞主流制片公司正与腾讯(Tencent)展开合作,将开发一种类似Netflix的流媒体服务——在电影于美国影院上映两周后,以流媒体的形式将影片资源传输至中国各地的用户家庭,以此来打击盗版。腾讯是中国规模最大的互联网企业之一。
Warner Brothers has a minority stake in Tencent’s Hollywood VIP service, which streams older movies on a subscription basis and rents new ones out online for as little as $1.

Warner Bros’ latest hit, 300: Rise of an Empire, is among the titles available to rent, while it is still showing in cinemas in the US and other markets.

Valued at $130bn, Tencent is the world’s fourth-largest quoted internet group after Google, Facebook and Amazon, operating a vast social media, e-commerce and gaming platform used by more than 500m people a month. More than 100m people pay to play its social games or use WeApp, its mobile messaging service.

Hollywood VIP launched quietly at the end of 2012 and has attracted “a few hundred thousand” subscribers, according to Tencent and Warner Bros. This is the first time they are making new movies available, however.

The service has hundreds of titles, showing a mix of Chinese and Hollywood movies: Walt Disney recently began licensing its films to the service, joining Universal Pictures, Miramax and Lions Gate Entertainment.

The aim was to transform a market where digital piracy is rife by giving consumers a legitimate way to watch new movies, said Ron Sanders, president of Warner Bros worldwide home entertainment distribution.

“How can we truly say we are frustrated with China not buying our content if we won’t make it available in the time appropriate for the consumer market place?” said Mr Sanders.

James Mitchell, chief strategy officer at Tencent, said: “In the western world movies go through a very clear windowing process. They appear in theatres and then a few months later they move to DVD, then later they move to online distribution services. In China, windowing hasn’t really developed so we thought there was an opportunity to get movies [to audiences] in a way that was more timely.”
腾讯首席战略官詹姆斯•米歇尔(James Mitchell)表示:“在西方世界,电影拥有非常清晰的发行窗口流程。电影首先在影院上映,几个月之后通过DVD的形式发行,然后才转移至网络发行服务平台。但在中国,发行窗口尚未真正形成,因此我们认为,可以通过一种更加及时的方式将电影提供给观众,这是一种市场机遇。”
