If you do a search for a popular brand on Taobao, the e-commerce website owned by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., chances are you will be greeted by tens--maybe hundreds--of listings for what appear to be the same products, but varying widely in price.

如果你在阿里巴巴集团(Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.)旗下的淘宝网(Taobao)搜索某个名牌，往往会搜到数十个，甚至上百个看似相同的产品，但其价格却相去甚远。

So what do you get if you order a cheap product versus a higher-priced one, and could some of those goods be counterfeits?

那如果从中挑选一个比较便宜的，会不会买到假货呢？

The Wall Street Journal went on an unscientific shopping spree to find out. We purchased six items from two of the top five categories-- cosmetics, shoes, apparel, accessories and bag--that shoppers buy online in China, according to a February report by KPMG. (We tried to buy some cosmetics as well, but those purchases never arrived.)

We tried to buy the same items at different prices.

The bottom line: Of the three items we were able to get verified by brands, all were fake.

-- 'North Face' Jackets

We purchased two black fleece jackets, advertised as North Face products, for about $25 and $60. When asked about the authenticity of the products, the sellers didn't reply. Subsequently, the listings disappeared from Taobao.

我们买了两件自称北面牌的黑色毛绒夹克，售价分别约25美元和60美元。当被问及产品真伪时，卖家没有回复。随后，产品从淘宝网上消失了。

Bruno Feltracco, an Asia Pacific managing director for The North Face's parent company, VF Corp., examined the jackets and said they were both counterfeits. The real product sells for more than $100, so the difference in price is a red flag, according to Mr. Feltracco. The jackets from Taobao sellers arrived in different shades of black, and the $60 jacket was thicker than the $25 one--although neither was as thick and soft as the genuine jacket Mr. Feltracco brought. Both came with product tags saying the jackets were part of the 'Summit Series,' while separate labels sewn onto the jackets said they were part of the 'Flight Series.' No authentic product would bear the names of two different series, Mr. Feltracco said.

-- 'Columbia Sportswear' Jackets

We bought one green jacket supposedly from Columbia Sportswear, for about $75. The seller told us it was 'new and authentic, bought from the U.S.' We mailed the jacket to Columbia Sportswear, which said it was counterfeit.

我们花大概75美元从淘宝网上买了件自称Columbia Sportswear的绿色夹克衫。卖家告诉我们夹克衫是新的正品，采购自美国。我们把它邮寄至Columbia Sportswear进行检验，公司告诉我们这是假货。

The actual product sells in the U.S. and Latin America, but not in Asia, according to John Motley, Columbia's director of intellectual property. Details including the color of the heat-transfer logo on the product and the size were also incorrect, while a Chinese-language tag with important product information was missing, he said. Columbia had sourced jackets of this style from a contractor in Vietnam with whom it terminated relations about two years ago, Mr. Motley said.

Mr. Motley said since the jacket 'is close to, yet slightly different from, a genuine jacket,' he believes it was 'most likely a counterfeit produced by our former Vietnamese contractor and smuggled into China.'

莫特利表示，这件夹克相当接近正品，与正品只有细微的差别，所以他认为该假冒产品很有可能是由那家曾经为Columbia代工的越南厂家生产并被走私到中国的。

Over the Taobao chat service, the seller continued to insist the product was real, even after being told that Columbia had said it was counterfeit.

-- 'Tory Burch' Wallets

We purchased three seemingly identical wallets advertised as Tory Burch, at different prices. We bought the cheapest we could find, for $50; a midrange wallet for about $100; and the most expensive offering for what looked like the same model, at $160. (The $160 wallet was supposedly discounted from $350, which is closer to the price that the Tory Burch wallet sells for in Hong Kong.)

我们以不同的价格从淘宝店购买了三只宣称是Tory Burch的钱包，这三个钱包外观很看上去都一样。淘宝上开价最低的是50美元，中档价位在100美元左右，同款商品最贵开价160美元。我们以这三种价格各买了一只。（淘宝店卖家称160美元是专柜价350美元打折后的价格。350美元接近Tory Burch钱包在香港的售价。）

All three wallets were described as 'rose red' in Chinese. But one wallet, when it arrived, had a tag listing it as 'light chambray.' Another --which was a noticeably brighter pink--had a tag saying 'rose.'

根据淘宝店家的描述，三个商品都是“玫红色。”记者收到商品后发现，其中一只钱包吊牌上写着“商品归类：浅色细纹”。另一只钱包是醒目的亮粉色，吊牌上写着“玫红”。

The $160 wallet didn't have a tag. It did come with what looked like a receipt from the Tory Burch store at Hong Kong's IFC Mall. But the receipt said 'faid' instead of 'paid,' and the phone number listed was for high-end department store Lane Crawford instead of Tory Burch.

第三只价格160美元的钱包没有吊牌，但附有一张看似来自香港国际金融中心(IFC Mall) Tory Burch专柜的小票。然而小票上写的是“faid”，而不是“paid”（已付款）字样；上面的电话号码则是高档百货商店连卡佛(Lane Crawford)的联系电话，而不是Tory Burch专卖店的。

We took the wallet to both stores. A supervisor at the Tory Burch store said the store didn't sell the wallet in this color, and the receipt and packaging weren't theirs. A Lane Crawford salesman said Tory Burch wallets were sold in the store, but not in this particular design. The salesman said the receipt wasn't theirs either.

The seller of the $160 wallet said the product was real, and offered a refund if we weren't satisfied. The other two sellers didn't respond to enquiries regarding their products' authenticity.

Tory Burch declined to authenticate the merchandise. The company said while it guarantees the authenticity of Tory Burch items purchased from authorized retailers or websites, Taobao.com isn't an official vendor.
