'The Mermaid': Love tale after Chow's smash hit of monkey king

Famed Hong Kong comedian and director Stephen Chow escorted his crew to Beijing, for the premiere of his latest film "The Mermaid". It's been two years after his last film which broke the box office record of 2013 among all Chinese speaking films.

Stephen Chow is one of the most famous comedy actors and directors in the Chinese-speaking world. His movies, such as "King of Comedy" and "Kung Fu Hustle", are considered classics and box office hits. His last movie, "Journey to the West" made 218 million dollars at the 2013 worldwide box office, and broke all the records of Chinese-speaking movies.

This time around, his film is about the love story between a wealthy biology Ph.D with a mermaid. At the release ceremony in Beijing, where he was joined by the film's cast: Deng Chao, Show Luo, Lin Yun and Zhang Yuqi, Chow couldn't help but make a joke about Deng Chao, the leading man in his latest comedy.

"The role I needed is like this. This character thinks he is awesome, while everyone else doesn't think so. When I called Deng Chao and asked him if he is interested or not, he said 'Let me read the script first'. Then I though, 'That's the person I was looking for. He really thinks he is awesome,'" Chow said.

19-year-old actress Lin Yun was selected from a pool of thousands of candidates for her role. When she was asked about the difference between herself and other girls in Stephen Chow's movies, she said they had one thing in common.

"Every girl in Stephen Chow's movies is different from each other. They all have their specialties. After all, they are all beautiful," Lin said.

Currently Chow is working as a producer on the sequel of his smash hit "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons", and Director Xu Ke will play an important role in it. Xu Ke showed up at the press conference to announce the news. Chow said directors being able to perform should be a given.

"How can a director show actors how to act, if he/she is not a good actor? So, I think Director Xu Ke and me are good actors," Chow said.
