Within the confines of the Spree valley, between Koepenick and Spandau, Coelln was founded on the Spree Island and Berlin on the north bank. Coelln was first mentioned in a document in 1237. Coelln and Berlin were unified in 1307, the unification being annulled in 1442. This separation lasted until 1709.

The city became the political centre of Brandenburg, Prussia and the German Reich. After the foundation of the German Reich in 1871, the city progressed quickly to become Germany’s largest industrial and cultural centre. The Second World War (1939-1945) triggered by the National Socialists, the Nazis, had a devastating effect on Berlin and led to the destruction of large parts of the city. Subsequent political developments divided the country and its capital: The building of the Wall in 1961 drastically and brutally completed this separation.

The Wall did not come down again until 1989, when the people from West and East Berlin were finally reunited. Berlin, the country’s largest city, has once again become the capital of a united Germany, the Brandenburg Gate symbolising this re-unification. Berlin is not only the seat of the government and cultural capital, but also Germany’s sports city. More than 525,000 male and female athletes are registered in about 1,900 clubs; 160 teams from Berlin compete in the top leagues in most differing sports – including football, of course.

From basketball to cycling, gymnastics, ice hockey, judo, swimming to volleyball and water polo. The Olympic Training Centre Berlin is the largest in Germany. It is not just by chance that Berlin, proportionate to its size and inhabitants, is very well represented in German Olympic squads. At the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano ten per cent of the German athletes came from Berlin.

Berlin has a tradition as a sports city. Not only because the first public exercise site was inaugurated as early as 1811, but also because many sporting highlights are staged here year by year.

For instance the Berlin Marathon, the international athletics event ISTAF, the women’s international tennis championships, the CHI equestrian event and the Six Days in the newly built »temple« of cycling, the Velodrom. The city’s currently most successful football clubs are Hertha BSC, which plays in the Bundesliga, and Tennis Borussia Berlin in the Zweite Bundesliga.

Major events at the Berlin Olympiastadion

1936 Olympic Games

1974 World Cup

More than 60 international football matches

The Olympiastadion has been the traditional home venue of Hertha BSC, often with capacity crowds

International stadium events/ISTAF annually
Two German Gymnastics Festivals (1968 and 1987) and two Gymnaestradas with guests from all over the world

Under the protection of the Dukes of Roden, the small settlement of ferry and fishermen developed into a market settlement, which would soon receive city status. In 1241, the Guelphic Duke “Otto the Child” conferred a charter on Hannover, which remains the oldest mention of the city.

Football Clubs:

Hannover 96 (Bundesliga)

The first documented mention of Hanover dates from the year 1150. Its charter as a city was confirmed in 1241, and in 1636 it was proclaimed the capital of the Welf dynasty. In 1866, the Kingdom of Prussia ended the rule of the Kingdom of Hanover, which had experienced its era of greatest importance during its personal union with the Kings of England from 1714 to 1837.

Hanover, which has been the capital city of Lower Saxony since 1946 and is one of Germany's ten largest cities, is a major international trade fair location. Two of the most important trade fairs, the Hanover Fair and CEBIT, are held at the city's new conference center. The trade fair center will also be one of the locations for EXPO 2000, where the World Fair will be held at the end of the millennium under its motto "Man - Nature - Technology ". More than 20 million guests from all over the world are expected to visit this event.

Hanover's unique Sports Park is one of the city's outstanding features, with the combined advantage of bordering on the city centre while at the same time being part of a large recreational area around Maschsee Lake.
2006德国世界杯主办城市(三) Hamburg

opulation:

1.7 million

Federal State:

Hamburg

Airports:

Hamburg Airport

Origins:

Hamburg’s origins do not actually lie on the Elbe, but on its tributary, the Alster. The initial settlement was built on the banks (old Saxon: “ham”) of this river in the 8th Century, not far from where it flows into the Elbe. Hammaburg castle was erected here around 950. The Elbe would gain greater significance in the 12th Century, as trade in Northern Europe flourished. In 1189, Hamburg received the right to levy customs duties on the Elbe from Emperor Barbarossa, and became a Free City of the Empire.

Football Clubs:

Hamburger SV (1. Bundesliga)
FC St.Pauli (3. Bundesliga)

Hamburg was founded under the name "Hammaburg " in 811, during the lifetime of Charlemagne. The granting of customs and commerce privileges in 1189 marks the beginning of Hamburg's ascent as a global centre of commerce. As one of the first members of the medieval Hanseatic League ("Hansa"), Hamburg was the League's principal trading port on the North Sea. Kings and princes have never reigned in Hamburg: Since the Middle Ages, it has been a city republic self-governed by its own citizens. Hamburg, which today is one of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany, has always strongly defended its autonomous statehood.

Hamburg's seaport is one of the world's seven largest container ports, and, in terms of surface area, it is the largest seaport in Europe. The port, and the 80,000 people who work there, are a distinguishing feature of Hamburg. The city on the Elbe and Alster rivers is also one of Germany's major media centres.

The German press agency dpa is located here, and 15 of the 20 highest-circulation German magazines are published in Hamburg. The city is also internationally renowned as Germany's foremost centre for musical productions, especially for musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber such as "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera". Hamburg is the location of the International Maritime Law Court, and of more consulates than any other city in the world, representing 100 countries.

Major sporting events are held in Hamburg throughout the year, and it is not unusual for the entire city to be on its feet. At the Hanse Marathon, for example. An elegant array of four-legged creatures competes neck and neck at the show-jumping, at polo tournaments, and at horse racing and trotting. In late summer, Hamburg's streets are given over to cyclists racing in the HEW Cyclassics.

The international tennis world has its sights on "Rotherbaum" and the Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli football teams can be relied on for staging hair-raisers every week. Hamburg's sporting activities have something for everyone.

Each city district has several pitches and indoor facilities for the "traditional" types of sports such as football, handball, tennis and hockey. There are golf courses on the outskirts of the Hanseatic city and, of course, Lake Alster and the River Elbe are excellent for water sports enthusiasts. Yachting, rowing, kayaking, canoeing and even surfing clubs with good training facilities can be found here.

Major Events at the Hamburg Stadium

1974 World Cup

EURO 88

International football matches

Home of the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV with national and European Cup matches

2006德国世界杯主办城市(四) Gelsenkirchen

opulation:

278,000

Federal State:

Nordrhein-Westfalen

Airports:

Düsseldorf Airport

Origins:

Gelsenkirchen – a lush green city with a colourful history.
Gelsenkirchen was first officially documented circa 1150. Even before the economic boom generated by the coal industry, buildings were constructed in the region which still attract visitors to Gelsenkirchen today: the Lüttinghof mansion (1308), the city’s oldest historical building, the Schloss Berge, a palace boasting 73 hectares of parkland, the Berger Reservoir or the Schloss Horst, an expensively restored palace which also serves as a registry office, attracting countless young couples each year.

Football Clubs:

FC Schalke 04 (Bundesliga)

But nothing brings the people of Gelsenkirchen together more so than football. The sport enjoys both a great tradition – with FC Schalke 04 having brought seven league titles to the city – and passionate supporters. The Aufschalke Arena is regularly sold out at home games.
Schalke alone has a membership base of some 48,000 fans. However, the blues are not the only team in town. Over 10,000 lovers of the beautiful game turn out each Saturday for Gelsenkirchen’s 70 clubs. The city’s 275,000 inhabitants are eagerly looking forward to the 2006 FIFA World CupTM with the tournament slogan, “A time to make friends™”, as their rallying cry. Football is truly at home in Gelsenkirchen, and visiting fans for the four group games and quarter-final will enjoy optimal facilities and a very warm welcome. Gelsenkirchen’s hospitality is regularly experienced by fans at international games and at UEFA Cup encounters. Down the years the city has thrown out the red carpet for the 1974 FIFA World Cup finals, the 1988 European Championship and the 2004 Champions League Final.

The city is ideally located for a FIFA World Cup Host City. Fellow Host City Dortmund is just 30 minutes away by motorway, while the stadium in Cologne can be reached in an hour. Some 6.4 million people live within a 50 kilometre radius of Gelsenkirchen.

Energy is another subject close to the city’s heart. As with the whole of the Ruhr Valley, Gelsenkirchen was once dominated by the coal industry. Today, the city is more renowned for cleaner solar energy and has developed into a national business and research centre for solar technology.
The end of coal exploitation has also made way for a rich cultural landscape with mineshafts being replaced by theatres and cabarets. The transition from coal to culture is epitomised by the former Consol colliery, while the installation of lighting has transformed the Rungeberg slag heap into a nocturnal landmark.

However, it is not only industrial romanticism that attracts visitors to the former mining town. Visitors to Schloss Horst can enjoy a journey back to the Renaissance period with organised tours through the magnificently restored palace. And for those who prefer to look to the future, there is a solar exhibition in the science park.

The lights in the solar city do not go out after the final whistle. Lovers of the stage, ballet and opera will be perfectly at home in the Musiktheater im Revier (MiR). In fact they will be spoilt for choice, for no other European city can boast so many theatres and museums in such a concentrated area as that in the Ruhr between Duisburg and Hamm.

Football fans can preserve their energy for upcoming games by relaxing in the countless peaceful green areas around the city. The sacred turf of the Arena is far from the only attractive greenery in Gelsenkirchen, with around a third of the city dedicated to parks, forests and meadows, including the parkland at the Schloss Berge, the Nordsternpark, former site of the Federal German Garden Exhibition, the Nienhausen Revierpark or forests such at the Resser Mark. The “Erlebniswelt Zoom” wildlife park also gives visitors the opportunity to observe animals from Africa, Asia and Alaska.

Major events at the former Gelsenkirchen Arena AufSchalke

Home of Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 with 1997 UEFA Cup Final against Inter Mailand
