A Colourful World Without Drugs

Benny walked home with heavy footsteps, with his head sinking down to his chest. His legs felt like bars of iron as he took great pains to drag himself on. He had attacked a teacher and had been taken to the general office. He was given a severe ticking off by the principal. The enormity of his wrongdoing dawned upon him when he realized he would be expelled. He had never expected that the principal would deliver such a crushing punishment.
On the way home, he looked around and upon seeing that people around him were happy, he became even more downcast. He was overwhelmed with sadness and wanted to cry his heart out, but he restrained himself. He was so forlorn that he did not even know where he was heading for. When he realized where he was, he saw a big gang of gangsters gambling near an abandoned alley.
“Hey boy! Want to join us? It will be real fun!” a gang member shouted out to Benny. Unable to fight the temptation, Benny went forward, still gloomy. “What’s there to feel sad about?”asked a gang member. “I am expelled, I will be finished if I go home,” cried Benny. “Never mind, we are also expelled but we are as happy as a king,” said some gang members. “Join our gang! It will certainly make you happy again and you will get a lot of things from us!” said the leader of the gang, tempting Benny.
“No! Gangs are harmful! It will bring doom upon you!” cried the angel of Benny’s heart. “Gangs are great! Being a gangster will be cool! Join the gang!” exclaimed the devil of Benny’s heart. After much consideration, he choosed to join the gang and with that, Benny took the first step onto the wrong tracks. Little did he know that this gang was the most notorious gang in the neighbourhood.
Benny settled in the gang leader’s house and never went home. He spent the day with his fellow gang members, hanging around, creating trouble. They extorted money from hawkers, vandalized public properties; get into gang fights and settlement talks. Benny learnt how to pickpocket and steal. Once, on a crowded bus, Benny stole the purse from a well dressed lady. Attempting to conceal his other hand with the newspaper, he gingerly slipped his hand into the lady’s handbag. He accomplished this “mission” which was dished out by the gang leader. He was still unaware of the dangers of the gang and was deeply involved in the gang activities as the days passed by.
On one fine day, Benny went to their hideout in the abandoned alley as usual. He saw his gang members passing something around. Being curious, Benny went forward and asked them what they were doing.
“Come on here, I have something special for my gang!” exclaimed the gang leader excitedly. Benny went and sat on a stone bench and something was introduced to him. Being a member, he could not reject it as his gang would ridicule him and call him a coward. The thing was in tablet form and it looked like something new, something special. “Take it! Take it!” shouted the gang members excitedly. I felt a surge of “courage” coming up and I swallowed it in one gulp. Benny did not know that he had taken a big step into doom.
The leader called for everyone’s attention and cleared his throat. He said “As reward for Benny’s bravery, loyalty and devotion to our gang, I will promote him. From today onwards, Benny will be the leader of ten members in this gang. Let us give a cheer to our new leader!”
After that, the gang leader took out some beer and they drank heartily. After drinking, the gang went to the discotheque. Benny was so happy that he danced for the whole night without stopping. In a nutshell, he was on top of the world. “Wow! It looks as if our new leader was thrown into a state ecstasy!”
“The effect is great, isn’t it? Want to try some more?” asked the leader when they were going home.
Taking the tablets had become part of his life and as time elapsed; his health was getting worse each day. He became addicted to it, as one cloud was enough to eclipse all the sun. After taking the tablets, he became affectionate to his gang members and he had a great sense of well-being. After taking the tablets, he was always affectionate to his gang members and he had a great sense of well-being. He felt that he had increased strength and could shake his head or do arduous work non-stop but often collapse with complete exhaustion after that. He was dehydrated even if he drank water. He sweated easily, suffered from jaw clenching and teeth grinding. He vomited when he consumed food and he was always anxious for no reason. He was often out of control. He smashed things and ran near the streets, screaming all the way but after that, he could not even remember a single thing.
Despite all this terrible things that befell on Benny, his fellow gang members turned a cold shoulder to him. His relationship with his gang was on the rocks as his gang members said that they did not want to be lumbered with sick members like him. Soon he was booted out of his gang. He dared not return home and had to sleep in the streets as the gang leader did not allow him to go to his house anymore. He had to lead the life of a tramp, without a proper home. The terrible effects of the drugs reduced him to a pathetic state, but nobody wanted to throw a glance at him. He was all alone, wandering in the streets, with no one to care for him, with no friends, with no hope of having a home and what everybody showed him was despise and scorn. Nobody wanted to get close to him as he was a drug addict. They speak of him with contempt and tried to get away from him with all means. Everyday, he spent his time taking the drug that he thought would give him “happiness”. He was wandering in the streets when he saw a book lying on the ground. Thinking that there would be money, Benny picked up the book and to his horror, it was a book that told him how harmful and destructive drugs could be. It dawned on him that he was taking one of the most deadly drugs-Ecstasy. He covered his face with horror, he could not believe that he was sick because of the drugs, but it was true. He was in a state of shock and when he came to his senses, he thought that doom would soon befall on him.
How dreadful the knowledge of drugs can be when there is no help in drugs!
The world was now so dark and hopeless to him. Everything that appeared in front of him was filled with despair. The light in his heart went dimmer and dimmer, struggling to keep glowing. His blood boiled with hatred every time he thought about the gang in such agony. He always sat in a deserted lane alone, with no one to share his plight to. He spent most of spending his time taking drugs.
Sometimes, when he tried to kick the terrible habit, his body reacted violently by banging his head on the wall. He really could not help to stop the habit that brought complete destruction to him. He even thought of ending his life, but the light which was flickering in his heart kept him from doing so. He ran from the police and parents and feared of getting caught, he had always collapsed with exhaustion. He even suffered from mental breakdowns and he almost lived like an escapee. Soon, he was in hysterics and he thought that it was the end of the world. His life would not be colourful anymore and the world, to him, was filled with sorrow and anguish, not bliss and joy.
One rainy night, while Benny was walking on the streets aimlessly, he saw a horrendous creature, advancing towards him at a rapid speed. The creature stood about five metres high and had an ugly face. Benny started to back away upon seeing the hideous creature but all of a sudden, a powerful charge of energy surged through him and he felt that he could do anything. Without hesitation, he charged at the creature and hit his head against the creature with all his might. As he hit the creature, everything went black.
When he opened his eyes, he found himself lying on a bed. He tried to lift himself out of bed, but the effort was too great. He fell back on the pillow in a faint. When he regained his consciousness, he learnt from the doctor that he had knocked his head against the wall last night and sustained some serious head injuries. He had to stay in the hospital for days in order to recover. He tried to recall what he did last night but he just could not remember a single thing.
The doctor did a checkup on him and found out that he was an addict of Ecstasy. When he fully recovered, he was handed over to the police. He was sent to the rehabilitation centre and received counseling everyday. The treatment he received there was no better than in the streets, but he put his heart and soul in kicking the habit. The light in his heart was glowing stronger and stronger as each day passed by. The angel in his soul was fighting off the devil, even though he suffered withdrawal symptoms. His health was getting better and better soon and he was going to see the light of the Sun again. The temptation of taking drugs of again was getting weaker and weaker. He wanted to put drugs off for life. His body was going to win the battle against drugs!
Sure enough, after a year, he got rid of the habit and he became healthy once more. When he went out, he caught his first breath of the wonderful world. He felt much better than of taking drugs. He could see the shining sun everyday and his heart was warm again, not fear, cold and bitter.
Now, the world was like a rainbow to him, not darkness, despair or misery. His life was colourful again but he still could remember the past sorrows which had embedded firmly in his heart. He also reminded himself that life was not a bed of roses and he hit the books. He knew who his true friends were as adversity is a good discipline. He could differ what right from wrong and he would never fell into the trap of drugs once more. He stayed away from bad company and was kind to everybody around him. He had begun a whole new life and he enjoyed every moment of it. His life became meaningful and he would not drift around with his head in the clouds. He started setting goals for himself and developed true values.
Benny put undivided attention in his work and became one of the top students in school. He made friends and he was not lonely anymore. His friends came back to him and he had people to share his feelings. He also warned others not to go astray like him and he sticked to the right track all along. He was sympathetic of those who were suffering as he also had gone through difficulties. He spent time talking to drug addicts who were in the nadir of hope, sharing his stories with them, in hope that they would take heart and break off their habit. He knew that every cloud has a silver lining and he had to work for happiness. Benny had begun a whole new life in a colourful world without drug!
|
